Introduction Letter
Dear Ward 12 Residents & Business Owners,
This is a very important letter relating to the upcoming October 2025 municipal election.
My name is Mike Jamieson, and I am hoping to become your Ward 12 City Councillor. I currently reside in the village of Prestwick in McKenzie Towne in Ward 12.
The reason for this letter to you is threefold: To let you know about legislative changes, introduce myself and most importantly get your top concerns relating to the municipal level of government.
Firstly, the Alberta Government recently passed Bill 20, which allows municipal political parties for the first time. This was done in response to unregulated and out of control spending and influence by the city union via a group that supported Councillor Evan Spencer called Calgary’s Future. This same group has launched a political party called the Calgary Party.
This new legislation will help create transparency by identifying who Councillor candidates are, and who supports them. It will also help eliminate vote splitting.
Last election, for example, I ran in Ward 11 (where I grew up in Acadia, but did not live) and I split the vote with Rob Ward which allowed the extreme left wing Councillor Kourtney Penner to win. The same vote splitting happened in our Ward where conservatives Craig Chandler, Stephen Phan and Mike Lavalley garnered 11,920 votes and if only one of them ran, Evan Spencer would have been soundly defeated. We need to avoid vote splitting this time. The group that I belong to, as the nominated candidate is called A Better Calgary Party (ABC). The ABC is not a typical political party, as there will be no party leader or party whip. Our duty is to put our Wards first!
My policies will be generated from our Ward 12 door-knocking, phone calls, and this survey.
I am a partner in a very successful construction firm and I will be taking a pay cut, but the future of my family, my city and province are worth it. Like you, I have been very frustrated with the lack of common sense at City Hall. So, rather than just whining about it, I am seeking to make a difference.
The previous council and the current one have proven to be disasters. Rather than focusing on roads, water mains, bridges, traffic lights, sewers, utilities, safety, snow clearing, potholes and infrastructure etc. They have chosen to focus on areas that are not municipal jurisdiction. The fact that the City continues to spend millions on public art is concerning. Current Council voted to spend $87 Billion on a Climate Emergency, which again is not municipal jurisdiction. We need to focus on municipal issues and stay in our lane.
This current city council's priorities ignore core essential services and infrastructure in favour of radical ideologies and pet projects. The bureaucrats are running the show and we need fiscally responsible councillors that understand how to run the Corporation of the City of Calgary.
Here Are Some Quick Facts: The City of Calgary has increased taxes almost every single year since 2010, resulting in more than doubling taxes over that span. Over 40% of City employees now earn base salaries in excess of $100,000 per year; The City Administration has risen by 2,268 staff in just two years. Total City budget is now almost $5 Billion per year; Calgary's downtown office vacancy rate is still the highest in the country. Last year, bankruptcies rose in Calgary. City Council opposes our wishes on most issues as evidenced by their support for Blanket Rezoning. I could go on and on, and I will be listing more things in due time here on my website.
Although there are many issues that I would like to see addressed such as a full Organizational Review of all City Departments to effectively ascertain where wise cuts should be made. These types of reviews are done at regular intervals in the private sector. I also believe the Municipal Act must be amended to include Term Limits to eliminate career politicians. I pledge to only serve two terms and then go back to the private sector. There are other issues that I will be discussing with you at the door and on the phones throughout the campaign.
However, the main reason for this letter to you is to ask what your top 3 municipal concerns are.
